The state will select up to 15 organizations to provide education on the claims process, as well as assist individuals and businesses in analyzing and preparing needed documentation for claims.

 

Technical assistance providers will be announced in July and will be funded by $2 million granted to the state by BP.

Claims

BP has now posted all claims statistics on its website at: Claims Statistics The information, which is updated daily, includes county statistics, response times, personnel deployed, amounts paid, individual and business claims statistics including reasons for claims, and more.

If you have been affected by the Oil Spill, you may be eligible for funds to help cover your losses. BP has set up a claims process and has begun to compensate individuals and business for loss and/or damages including property damages and loss of income.

 

Who

Both private individuals and businesses may file claims.

What

You may be eligible for compensation for loss of income (including for fishing and rental property), property damage or loss.

How

 

Claims may  be filed with BP in three ways:

1.     Call the BP Claims Line at 1-800-440-0858. The line is toll-free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

2.     File a claim online.  (See links to the claims form below this box.)

3.     Visit one of 22 BP claims centers listed below (scroll down to see locations in Louisiana).

How to Check Existing Claims

To check on the status of a claim or if you have not heard from a claim adjuster, call:

 1-800-573-8249 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. CDT, seven days a week. Be prepared to provide your name, address, and claim number.

 No person asserting a claim or receiving payment for interim benefits will be asked or required to sign a release or waive any rights to assert additional claims, to file an individual legal action, or to participate in other legal actions associated with the Deepwater Horizon incident.

For those who have already pursued  the BP claims process and are not satisfied with BP’s resolution, call the Coast Guard's National Pollution Fund Center (NPFC) at (800) 280-7118. 

 

To file a claim with the Coast Guard, you must first file a claim with BP. Both private individuals and businesses that have filed claims with BP that were either denied or not settled in 90 days may file claims by calling 1-800-280-7118.

The goal of the new mobile claims center is to reach people who otherwise have problems traveling to the permanent centers in Houma, Chauvin, Grand Isle and Cut Off.

The mobile claims center will be open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day it is available. 

The mobile claims center will travel with four claims adjusters to assist residents filing claims. If you are submitting a claim for the first time, you’ll need to bring picture identification, social security number with a card, if possible, and one or more forms of income verification, such as tax returns, recent pay stubs and trip tickets. If you’ve already filed a claim, then you’ll need to know your claim number.

** NEW - (June 17, 2010) - The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) has established new temporary satellite locations in Cut Off and Lafitte, offering services for individuals affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

In Cut Off, services will be offered June 17 through June 22 

South Lafourche Library, 16241 East Main Street 

Hours are 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday - Saturday.

In Lafitte, a satellite office will operate June 21 through June 30 

Jean Lafitte Town Hall, 2654 Jean Lafitte Blvd. 

Hours are 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. each week day.

A range of services will be offered, including assistance with applying for potential jobs that may become available due to the oil spill.

Workforce Commission services are offered at no cost to employers and participating job seekers.

** (June 9, 2010) - Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced the following opening to recreational and commercial fishing in portions of state inside and outside waters east of the Mississippi River effective immediately today June 9. A precautionary closure of this area was issued April 30.

** (June 8, 2010) - As part of its commitment to restore the environment and habitats in the Gulf Coast region, BP today announced that it will donate the net revenue from oil recovered from the MC252 spill to create a new wildlife fund to create, restore, improve and protect wildlife habitat along the coastline of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.  The creation of this fund is over and above BP’s obligations under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990.

** (June 3, 2010) - Governor Bobby Jindal announced that the state is executing an emergency contract to immediately begin mobilizing dredges and start work on the six sand-boom segments approved by the White House. The Governor said he sent BP an ultimatum today with two choices – sign a contract and start dredging immediately or provide the funds now and let the state start dredging.

** (May 31, 2010) - Unified Area Command Warn of Employment Scam: Individuals falsely representing themselves as BP employees are offering applicants training and promising job placement for a fee.  “BP does not charge to train and hire applicants," said Neil Chapman, BP spokesperson.

** (May 28, 2010) - As many as 500 Louisiana residents who applied through the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) for oil spill clean-up jobs got BP-specific training or are on schedule for training Thursday, the LWC reported today.  Training and recruitment efforts are ongoing, with LWC and PEC working with BP-selected contractors to provide qualified individuals who are ready for hire. ** (May 28, 2010) - The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) will have four mobile units open, Saturday, May 29, and on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, offering services for individuals affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

These units will continue to provide services during the same hours on Tuesday, June 1, through Friday, June 4 .

Mobile unit locations are:

Islenos Museum, 1345 Bayou Road, St. Bernard. Open 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

2654 Jean Lafitte Blvd. (adjacent to the Town Hall), Lafitte. Open 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

  ** (May 24, 2010) - The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) mobile unit in Cut Off, which offers services for individuals affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, is now located at 16241 E. Main St.

Hours of the mobile unit, located on the grounds of the Lafourche Parish Public Library, are 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. each week day.  A range of services will be offered, including assistance with applying for potential jobs that may become available due to the oil spill.  The Department of Social Services (DSS) also has staff in the library to assist people with applying for social services such as the regular Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps.

** (May 21, 2010) - The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) mobile units in Grand Isle and Cut Off will be open tomorrow, Saturday, May 22, from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., offering services for individuals affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

In Grand Isle, the mobile unit is located on the grounds of the Grand Isle Community Center, 3811 La. 1.

In Cut Off, services are being offered at the Cut Off Youth Center, 205 W.79th St.

The mobile units also are open each week day from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

** Mobile unit on Friday, May 14 in Lafitte, offering services for individuals affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  The mobile unit, located at 2654 Jean Lafitte Blvd., will be open each weekday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

** Mobile Career Unit in Plaquemines Parish Thursday, May 13, to serve local residents needing workforce services. The mobile unit's location is 41093 Highway 23 in Boothville-Venice, the same location as BP's claim office in the area.
