Thank you for your continued patience as we continue to identify areas where volunteers can be deployed. An aggressive cleanup operation to secure our Gulf Coast and protect environmentally sensitive sites is ongoing. Oil is a toxic substance and dangerous if handled improperly. Only specially trained responders may clean it up or dispose of it. We ask volunteers to avoid any site where oil is spotted on land and keep children and companion animals safely away.

If you want to register for volunteer opportunities, please do so at www.volunteerlouisiana.gov to receive updates and information on any volunteer opportunities as they are identified. You may also register with the Gulf Response Involvement Team (GRIT) for some beach mitigation efforts: www.lagulfresponse.org. Volunteers at this time will not be assigned to oil-touching activities. While there are still limited environmental response activities, we do expect more needs to be identified in the coming weeks. We are working closely with conservation groups who are developing their strategy for what is going to be a long recovery effort. At the same time, the human services volunteer opportunities continue to grow. For a listing of these opportunities, please visit the HandsOn New Orleans Oil Spill Response Calendar for a listing of these opportunities: Oil Spill Response Calendar or Catholic Charities of New Orleans Volunteers Needed link. Please note that some of these opportunities will help with individuals affected by the oil spill. Many people's lives have been displaced by this event. While you may be interested primarily in environmental issues, please consider the human services opportunities as well. Depending
