Major to Record Flooding Expected along the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers

May 14, 2011 - Excessive rainfall in the Middle Mississippi River Valley over the past couple of weeks has produced major to record flooding along much of the lower Mississippi River.  In addition, the opening of the Morganza Spillway will produce significant flooding over portions of the Atchafalaya River basin. This flood event will last several more weeks and may be affected or influenced by additional rain events prior to significant lowering of water levels. It is recommended that all interests along and near the Mississippi and Atchafalaya River Basins should closely monitor this situation. Meanwhile, click on the links provided below for the latest information to assist you in assessing the situation. National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office

Iberia Parish Mississippi Flood Update - Sunday, May 15th

Iberia Parish - At this afternoon's state conference call with GOHSEP the Corps of Engineers announced that they have now opened four floodgates for a release rate into the basin of about 40,000 cubic feet per second. The Corps also announced depth projections for the basin that are 2 - 3 feet lower than before based on the reduced flow expected for the Morganza Floodway. While this isn't an official Corps projection for our Parish we now expect water levels about eight to ten feet below the lowest levee crest in our area.

There is still no prediction for flood waters to affect any inhabited area in Iberia Parish.

Iberia Parish Mississippi Flood Update - Saturday, May 14

Iberia Parish -  The Corps currently expects to eventually open the Morganza Floodway to 21% of its capacity, or 126,000 cubic feet per second.  This is predicted to occur May 22nd and is down from the initial planning figure of 300,000 cubic feet per second.

The lowest point of the Atchafalaya Basin West Guide Levee protecting us is 27 feet high.  The Corps previously predicted a water level at that levee of 20 - 21 feet.  I have asked if that will change based on the reduced flow rate through the Morganza Floodway.

We are continuing our precautionary coordination with the Sheriff's Office, Fire District, National Guard and Red Cross on dealing with any levee breach in our area.

There is still no prediction for floodwaters to affect any populated area in Iberia Parish.
