![]() ![]() 232-HELP was established in 1965 as a comprehensive information and referral (I&R) center serving the Acadiana Region of Southwest Louisiana. The agency is a member of the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems, Inc. (AIRS), an international professional association of information and referral providers. Information and referral involves much more than just looking up a phone number. It is the process of helping people to understand their problems and enable them to make informed decisions regarding possible solutions, cutting through the maze of social service programs. Certified I&R specialists provide early intervention and resource support for people in times of personal and family crisis, and advocate for those who require extra support to access needed services. 232-HELP/211 is committed to helping individuals, families and communities identify, understand and effectively use all available resources; and to strengthening their capacity for self-reliance and self determination through education, affirmation, advocacy, collaborative planning and problem solving. Government cutbacks, welfare reform, corporate down-sizing, and the emerging complexities seen in today's society has impacted the human service delivery system and increased the need for information and referral. As we enter the twenty-first century and the future unfolds, information and referral will play an increasingly vital role in the human service arena and 232-HELP/211 will strive to meet the challenge.
